Design Into Business

The Design into Business programme was an initiative aimed at making Scotland more competitive in the global marketplace through design and it's integration into Scottish business and strategy.

The aims of Design into Business were three-fold:-

  • Encouraging Scottish companies to utilise design as a strategic business tool to enhance business performance, productivity and international competitiveness
  • Working with Scottish designers to enhance business skills, promote design at home and abroad
  • Create an environment for lasting collaboration between Scottish designers and industry.

The 2007 programme focussed on instigating an environment for lasting collaboration between the design sector and enterprise sectors beyond the duration of the festival through a programme of advocacy including business master-classes, industry partnerships, case studies, professional skills workshops for designers, workshops for SMEs, networking events, training for the participants of the Scottish Show 2007 and culminated in the national Business Insights: Profiting by Design Conference.

Highlights from 2007 included free talks by international business leaders such as Joe Ferry of Virgin Atlantic, Josephine Green of Phillips Design, Jonathan Sands of Elmwood and Bill Sermon from NOKIA. The programme was extremely well received across Scotland from both design and non-design businesses, as some of the key findings from the independent evaluation illustrate:-

  • 77% of attendees felt the event/workshop presented design in an accessible way
  • 72% felt the event/workshop convinced them of the benefits of good design
  • Almost 75% of respondents stated that they would be very likely/likely to take further action as a result of having attending a DiB event/workshop.
