Festival Highlights in Dundee

While the main Festival period is now over, there are still amazing design-minded events to look forward to in Dundee.

Coming this September 18, the Six Cities Design into Business programme’s conference, Business Insights: Profiting by Design, is for business of all sizes, offering an exclusive how-to from leading business gurus. Find out how to boost profits and add value to your business through investment in good design. This national conference will give you the answers you need to compete in today’s competitive global marketplace.

During the main Festival period, 17 May — 3 June, Dundee Contemporary Arts was host to the critically acclaimed Six Cities Design Festival exhibition, Peacocks Among the Ruins. This bold exhibition looked at the use of the natural world within interiors, providing a historical context alongside contemporary work. Surprising and fresh, Peacocks Among the Ruins was co-curated by the celebrated Glasgow design duo Timorous Beasties and DCA. It was accompanied by a brilliant series of exhibition-themed workshops that were enjoyed by people of all ages.

Visual storytelling design was the topic of many Festival happenings in Dundee, thanks to the city’s rich history in comic book publishing. The comics of Dundee-based publishing house DC Thomson have long commanded world-wide audiences, making their publishing of a specially commissioned Festival comic, See New Worlds, truly special. A comic conference looked at the medium from a literary standpoint, and an attempt to break the world record for the longest comic strip got the community creating together.

At Caird Hall, a Designer Double Bill featuring Martin Lambie-Nairn, responsible for the conception of the show ‘Spitting Image’, and Hector Pottie of the design firm Third Eye Design, brought together the best of design talent.
