This event was part of the Six Cities Design Festival programme in 2007.
A major exhibition from the Vitra Design Museum, Living in Motion examines the age-old pursuit of flexible, portable modes of living. This display of innovative design demonstrates how contemporary architects and designers meet our needs for rapidly changing home and work environments. Bringing together both architecture and design, Living in Motion features modular furniture and movable architecture with over 150 objects ranging from traditional South American hammocks to modern day living pods. Flexible modes of living draw on age-old traditions - from Uzbek Yurts to North African tents. The preoccupation with adaptability has caught the imagination of many more recent designers, from Frank Lloyd Wright through to Ron Arad and Rem Koolhaas, all of whom are represented in this exhibition. An extensive workshop programme runs alongside the exhibition. The Six Cities Design Festival's Learning programme has created an activity pack in response to this exhibition. Aimed at 8-12 year olds, the Living in Motion Fun Kit invites young people to design their own dream home, and explore different ways of living. Designed for use at home or in the classroom, you don't need to have seen the exhibition to enjoy the activities in the kit. You can pick up your free Fun Kit at the Living in Motion exhibition and the Edinburgh Festival Information Point, or Download it here (format: pdf 3.38mb)
