Design is here in Scotland
From 17 May — 3 June 2007, The Six Cities Design Festival celebrated and promoted all types of Scottish design, from the truly life-changing to those clever inventions that simply make us smile. From the highly personal to the truly global, the Six Cities Design Festival proudly had it all.
Scotland’s biggest ever celebration of design, the Festival flourished simultaneously for three weeks in all six of Scotland’s cities: Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness and Stirling. Every Scottish city has its own character, which was reflected in the particular events and activities in the Six Cities Design Festival. All of the events nationwide were bound together by Scotland’s passion for design, raising awareness of our country’s strong creative sector.
With a range of free exhibitions, walks, talks, tours, workshops, and public happenings, the most satisfying outcome of the Festival was that it really got people at home and abroad talking abut how and why good design can help us become happier, and our businesses become more competitive.
The main Festival period may be over, but the message of the Six Cities Design Festival is still going strong. On 18 September 2007, the Festival is hosting a conference to acquaint the business community with how integrating design into their companies will boost profits and add value to their products and services. The Six Cities Design into Business Conference: Profiting by Design is a day of renowned speakers, practical workshops, networking and information sharing for non-design businesses of all sizes.
By engaging as many people as possible to take part in the Six Cities Design Festival — be it schoolchildren, enthusiasts, or business executives — we are able to show how designers are helping Scotland become an even better place to live, work and play. We are able to show that design isn’t just a luxury; it is the careful application of creative thinking and a fundamental part of how we organise the world around us.
