Design for, by and with young people
The Six Cities Design Festival in Stirling showcased how the entire community can engage with design - from toddlers and teens to parents and grandparents.
From album covers and design markets, to musical chairs and bus tours, design came alive in Stirling, as we demonstrated how design impacts on every aspect of our lives whatever our age.
Festival Highlights in Stirling
The historic Cowane's Hospital in Stirling proved to be a beautifully unique space for Dimensions of Design: 100 Classic Chairs, a flagship Festival exhibition from the Vitra Design Museum. Presenting one hundred miniature chairs, crafted to a scale of 1:6, this exhibition provided the compactness and clarity needed to trace key developments in international design and to gain insight into a wide variety of styles. Families celebrated the exhibition with an event called Musical Chairs at the macrobert centre, which combined 100 different chair designs with family workshops including mosaic chair design, eco chair making and of course an opportunity for visitors to try out the collection of chairs on display.
Families also had the chance to roll up their sleeves and get creative at Adventures in Design, a family-friendly day of practical design workshops for the whole community.
DIY: Design it Yourself was a hit exhibition at The Changing Room gallery. Tracing the highly personal approach to design in the music industry, this exhibition featured rare examples of record sleeve design, concert posters, badges and ephemera.
DIY linked in perfectly with our sell out Designer Double Bill talk in Stirling with Peter Saville, designer and founding member of the landmark independent record label Factory Records and Robert Johnston, founder of the Glasgow-based design company Pause Button Edit. You can watch it here.
The Design into Business programme presented Kschocolât and Third Eye Design in a discussion about the design commissioning process, and how design has directly influenced sales, a business workshop on the benefits of brand identity and a designer workshop on Creative PR.
