Home Environment

The Six Cities Design Festival in Inverness put sustainable home design in the spotlight.

The comforts of home don't have to be at the cost of high amounts of energy and natural resources. The Festival demonstrated this with inspirational cutting-edge home design, contemporary and future materials, technologies and renewable energy systems to support sustainable and environmentally friendly living. Interior design, furniture, home technology systems, recycling and garden design of the homes of the future were all featured.

Festival Highlights in Inverness

An exhibition from the Museum of Finnish Architecture in Helsinki, New, Old, Green, delved into the world of sustainable architecture and was presented in a specially transformed former office building in the city centre. Inspiring and offering practical examples, New, Old, Green demonstrated how contemporary architecture can minimise the negative environmental impact of buildings and create healthier communities.

Bringing the theme of sustainable design closer to home, the exhibition Greenhouse/Blackhouse exhibited the submissions to the Highland Housing Fair competition, which collected designs for a new eco-community in Inverness from UK architects. The winning designs have been selected and are now on view at http://www.scottisharchitecture.com.

The Inverness Museum and Art Gallery was host to two Festival exhibitions, This One Feels Just Right, which celebrated diverse and individual chair design, and HomeRoom, which put contemporary Highland design in the spotlight.

A fashion show at Eastgate Shopping Centre exhibiting work by Highland designers proved to be an incredible evening, as was our entertaining Designer Double Bill talk with Wayne Hemingway and brothers Alasdair and Neil Stephen of the Isle of Skye architecture firm Dualchas. You can watch the talk here.

Design into Business included Jonathan Sands from Elmwood Design, who spoke about the Effectiveness of Design. A joint networking event between the Inverness Chamber of Commerce and Fusion ‘Design in Action' was an interactive session with a chance to experience the creative process.
