Quality of Life
The Six Cities Design Festival in Edinburgh showcased how we use design to live, work and play in the city.
Edinburgh is a dramatic city bursting with energy, and is home to countless inspiring inventions. We worked collaboratively with designers to demonstrate how Edinburgh's rich intellectual tradition continues to evolve into great design, improving and enriching our lives.
Festival Highlights in Edinburgh
During the Festival the capital city was brimming with design-minded walks, talks, tours, exhibitions and happenings.
The City Arts Centre was host to a major exhibition from the Vitra Design Museum, Living in Motion: Design and Architecture for Flexible Dwelling. Featuring over 150 design objects ranging from native South American hammocks to Joe Colombo's ‘Boby' mobile storage system, Living in Motion examined the ways that contemporary architects and designers meet our needs for rapidly changing work and home environments. A fantastic line up of workshops complemented the exhibition.
Another main highlight of the Festival in Edinburgh was Northern City: Between Light and Dark, a stunning series of installations that spanned across the city of Edinburgh, created by Scotland's leading architects and artists, including Turner Prize nominee Nathan Coley.
Design Fairground families to Princes Street for a long weekend of fun design activities and 3DEdinburgh showcased the best furniture, fashion and jewellery designers from the city in a specially constructed marquee in West Princes Street Gardens.
Our Designer Double Bill talk with legendary clothing designer Zandra Rhodes and Belinda Dickson, at The Hub was an incredible evening - watch it here - as was the Success by Design talk with Bill Sermon, Vice President of Design for Nokia Multimedia, presented by the Design into Business programme and co-hosted by Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce. The DiB programme also delivered workshops for both designers and non-design businesses, including Brand Essentials for the business sector and Creative PR for designers.
